"I’ve been very focused on training since high school and always though I had a handle on my training routines and how they were benefiting me and my performance. I’ve even had the opportunity to train with some of the best strength and conditioning coaches in the National Hockey League as well as some of their athletes. I really felt that I had everything covered. It wasn’t until I started training with Shannon that I realized just how wrong I was. Even though I was strong and fit for my age, Shannon pointed out many areas where I was weak and could make improvements. Terms such as posture, breathing, alignment, power, disassociation…the list went on an on and it was then that I knew I had so much to learn. As depressing and humbling as this discovery was, it was also a positive for me. It opened my eyes and showed me how much stronger I could get and how much more fit I could become. Shannon took me on this path, helping me to better understand my body and what I needed to do to reach these new goals, all the while being safe and thinking about my long term health as well as what I could do in the short term. She showed me how to train “smart” and as a result I’m stronger and fitter today then I’ve ever been. When I first started training with Nancy I realized there were also a lot of mental issues I had to get past, Nancy simply let my body tell us how fast to progress, with professional and technical testing. In challenging me to achieve good health and general well being through Pilates you have taught me to challenge and respect myself. At 47, I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in years. We can evaluate my progress in terms of numbers-when I came to you I weighted an unimaginable 240 pounds, had no energy and a very unhealthy lifestyle. My current weight is 190 (quickly approaching my goal of 160!), I’m strong, and my lifestyle has turned around. But what I have gained from Pilates and training with you is so much more than a number.
I started taking yoga classes about 9 years ago at the suggestion of a masseuse who was helping me relieve pain in my leg muscles. Attending class once/week and doing yoga at home twice/week over time, I noticed my leg muscles were free of pain, and my bad posture was gradually improving as well. About 3 years ago, I began taking yoga classes from Ann Duren. Because of her teaching style, I have seen a much greater improvement in both my flexibility and my posture, as well as a tremendous increase in my core strength. Ann emphasizes integrity in the yoga poses, along with awareness and respect for our physical limitations. Through Ann’s instruction, I have also become much more aware of my mind/body connection. She is a wonderful teacher.
